MSCHF Cofounder Lukas Bentel Steps Away to Focus on Independent Work

Lukas Bentel, a cofounder and founding chief creative officer of art collective MSCHF, is leaving the group to pursue independent art projects, design commissions and commercial work. He said he was proud of what the team had made together and wants to create work that stays with people beyond the moment it appears.

Founded in 2019, MSCHF became known for projects that brought art into everyday culture and challenged conventions around how it is made and experienced. Its work has spanned sculpture, footwear, fashion, software, publishing, furniture and vehicles. Bentel conceived, designed, created or directed nearly 300 of the collective's released works.

Among the group's best-known projects are Big Red Boots, which gained widespread attention online, and "ATM Leaderboard," an interactive installation at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2022 that displayed participants' bank balances in a public ranking. MSCHF has also presented exhibitions with Perrotin in Seoul, Los Angeles and New York.

The collective is continuing its work with members Daniel Greenberg, Stephen Tetreault, Gabriel Whaley and Kevin Wiesner. Bentel's departure opens a new chapter for both the artist and the group, showing how creative partnerships can evolve while their ideas continue to shape culture.
