a16z Crypto Rebrands as a16z Frontier, Expanding Its Technology Focus

Andreessen Horowitz has renamed its digital-asset investment group a16z Crypto as a16z Frontier, broadening its focus to a wider range of emerging technologies.

Led by Chris Dixon, the team will explore areas including artificial intelligence, robotics and new networks connecting people and machines. The group is not leaving blockchain behind: Dixon has said the technology could give these networks built-in economic capabilities.

Since its launch in 2018, the investment practice has raised nearly $10 billion across five funds and backed companies including Coinbase. Its general partners include Dixon, Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. Ali Yahya, an early investor in the firm's crypto strategy, has left Andreessen Horowitz.

The expanded mandate reflects a broader view of how emerging technologies may converge, with blockchain potentially playing a role in the networks of the future.
