A recent update to Google's privacy policy says information from Drive, Gmail and Photos may be used to personalize ads when those apps are connected to Google services that support ad personalization. One such connection can be made through Personal Intelligence, an opt-in Gemini feature that uses linked apps to provide more tailored responses.
Google says it does not share personally identifiable information with advertisers, and that ads are not based directly on Gmail inboxes or Photos libraries. However, the policy wording means connected app information could still influence ad personalization. Users who prefer to keep these apps separate can review and change their settings.
How to review connected apps
In your Google Account, open Data & Privacy. Under Personalization & activity, choose Personalization settings, then Manage Personalized Recommendations in Search Services. Open Connected Content Apps under Additional Personal Intelligence and disconnect any apps you do not want linked.
Reviewing these controls can help users make informed choices about how connected services shape their experience. As AI features become more integrated, clear privacy settings will be increasingly important to balancing personalization and user control.
