Google Opens TorchTPU to Bring PyTorch Apps to Its AI Chips

Google has open-sourced TorchTPU, enabling PyTorch applications to run on its AI chips with minimal changes as cloud providers widen hardware choices for developers.

Google Opens TorchTPU to Bring PyTorch Apps to Its AI Chips

Google has released TorchTPU as an open-source project, giving developers a way to run PyTorch applications on the company's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). The move adds another hardware option for teams building and operating AI models.

PyTorch is a widely used toolkit for creating, training and running AI applications. Since many of its tools have traditionally been optimized for Nvidia GPUs, shifting applications to other chips can require extra work. TorchTPU is designed to simplify that move: developers can adapt existing projects to Google's TPUs and cloud platform with a configuration change rather than rewriting their applications.

Tools to support migration

Google says it worked with Meta, Hugging Face, Inferact and RadixArk to help TorchTPU integrate with popular AI development tools. It has also introduced a TPU agent suite to assist with migration and troubleshooting, and updated LiteRT to better support PyTorch applications on phones, laptops and embedded devices.

The announcement comes as cloud providers develop software that connects PyTorch applications with their own AI chips. Amazon has introduced TorchNeuron for its Trainium processors, while also proposing changes to the main PyTorch project intended to make the framework less dependent on Nvidia hardware.

These options do not guarantee that developers will move away from Nvidia, but they could make it easier to compare hardware and cloud platforms. Over time, broader compatibility may give AI teams more flexibility in choosing where and how their applications run.
