Volvo and Nvidia Expand Autonomous Driving Partnership

Volvo is expanding its Nvidia partnership to develop automated driving technology for future cars, combining Hyperion, Alpamayo and Halos across electric, hybrid and petrol models.

Volvo and Nvidia Expand Autonomous Driving Partnership

Volvo is broadening its long-running partnership with Nvidia to develop automated driving technology for future vehicles. The planned system is designed to help cars navigate both city streets and highways.

The collaboration brings together Volvo's vehicle engineering and safety expertise with three Nvidia technologies: the Hyperion sensor and computing architecture, the Alpamayo driving software suite, and the Halos safety evaluation layer.

Alpamayo combines AI models, datasets and development tools with conventional software systems that process camera and radar information. Running these approaches alongside one another, supported by multiple sensor types, is intended to strengthen the system's capabilities and safety design.

Volvo has not announced the partnership's value or named the first vehicle to use the new technology. The automaker says a new model featuring the technology is expected to arrive later this decade. The wider effort is intended to bring the expanded driving technology to more than electric vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and petrol-powered models.

Volvo's battery-electric vehicles already use Nvidia's Orin computing chip to process data from cameras, radar and other sensors. The companies now plan to standardize more around Hyperion, creating a shared foundation for their broader work.

As automakers increasingly develop integrated software and hardware platforms, this partnership could help make advanced driving technology available across a wider range of vehicles.
