OpenAI is expanding ChatGPT into a broader productivity platform with ChatGPT Slides, a feature that turns prompts and conversations into presentation decks. The dedicated tool is currently available to Pro subscribers and above, while free and Plus users can generate simpler PowerPoint-style files from chats.
In a comparison using the same presentation topic, the Pro version produced a longer, more detailed deck with charts and official product imagery. Users can also adjust slide elements manually or request changes through prompts. However, building a deck entirely through instructions may feel less direct than editing in a conventional presentation app, and the results can still benefit from human review.
Google's Gemini, integrated into Google Slides for eligible subscribers, offered a more polished visual layout in the comparison and asked for details such as the intended audience and design style. It also made factual and visual errors, underscoring the need to verify AI-generated content. Google Slides provides a more established set of layout and editing tools, while ChatGPT Slides offers prompt-based changes to individual elements.
Different strengths for AI-assisted presentations
For quick first drafts, ChatGPT Slides can turn a large amount of information into a presentable starting point. Gemini's integration with Google Slides currently pairs AI assistance with a mature editing environment. Neither tool consistently replaces the judgment and precision of a human creator.
As these systems develop, closer integration between conversational AI and familiar office software could make presentation creation faster while keeping creative direction and fact-checking in users' hands.
