New archaeological analysis has sharpened one of history's most intriguing timelines: Norse explorers were active in North America in 1021 CE. The finding centers on L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, the only widely confirmed Norse site in the region and a key link to the Vinland sagas.
Researchers examined wooden remains from the site and used a precise method tied to a known spike in atmospheric carbon-14 caused by a major solar event in 993 CE. By matching that signal in tree rings and counting outward to the bark edge, the team determined when the trees were cut. Three samples pointed to the same year: 1021.
The study strengthens the view that Norse people were building and working at L'Anse aux Meadows over a thousand years ago. While the result does not prove the settlement was Leif Erikson's own camp, it offers a firm calendar date for Viking activity in the Americas and adds clarity to the broader story of transatlantic exploration.
