TikTok has reached an agreement with the state of Alabama that includes a payment of at least $100 million and a new set of youth-focused safety measures. Under certain conditions, the total value of the agreement could rise to $300 million.
The arrangement introduces a two-hour daily screen-time limit for underage users, alongside expanded parental controls. TikTok will also apply new restrictions to overnight use and certain cosmetic filters for younger audiences.
More structured digital experiences for teens
The measures are designed to give families clearer tools for managing young people's time and experiences on the platform. Parents will gain additional options to guide account settings, while younger users will encounter more defined boundaries around extended use.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said the agreement establishes stronger protections for families in the state. TikTok stated that the measures build on its continuing work to improve safety tools for teenagers.
The development reflects a broader shift across the technology sector toward age-appropriate platform design, where screen-time management, parental participation and youth wellbeing play a more central role in product development.
As digital platforms refine safeguards for younger audiences, this approach could help shape a future in which technology is designed to support more balanced and family-aware online habits.
