The U.S. Department of Justice has indicated that federal employees can once again download TikTok on government-issued phones, marking a notable shift in workplace tech policy.
The change follows a 2022 rule that had restricted the short-form video app on official devices. According to the DOJ memo, that restriction is no longer considered applicable after a new ownership arrangement for TikTok's U.S. business.
The deal places TikTok's American operations under a joint venture supported by Oracle, Silver Lake, and MGX, with Oracle serving as the security partner. ByteDance remains a minority stakeholder with a 19.9% share.
The memo also says that executive branch agencies may allow the app on official devices at their own discretion, as long as workplace policies are followed. The update reflects how digital platforms, security frameworks, and public-sector rules are increasingly being redesigned together.
