Matthew Brown Expands Gallery Space in Hollywood Media District, Emphasizing Faith in LA

Matthew Brown, a prominent art dealer, is significantly expanding his presence in Los Angeles by relocating to a former warehouse at 1145 Seward Street in the Hollywood Media District. This new space, just a mile from his previous locations on La Brea Avenue, offers a vastly different design aesthetic, as Brown noted during a recent phone interview.

"It's a transformation," Brown remarked. "The attention to detail, the lighting, and the strategic placement of skylights all contribute to a unique atmosphere. My initial gallery lacked the experience I have gained since then."

The new gallery, which spans 13,000 square feet, includes 6,000 square feet dedicated to exhibitions, alongside offices, viewing rooms, and storage areas. The design retains elements of the original warehouse, such as the wood bow truss beam ceilings and exposed brick, while also ensuring ample natural light flows throughout the space.

Brown collaborated with architect Markus Dochantschi of StudioMDA, who previously designed Brown's New York gallery. This marks Dochantschi's inaugural project in Los Angeles, adding to his impressive portfolio that includes renowned galleries like Marian Goodman Gallery and Karma Gallery.

Located amidst a vibrant gallery scene that includes notable names like Jeffrey Deitch and Regen Projects, Brown's new establishment is poised to enhance the cultural fabric of the area. His first exhibition in the new space, featuring artist Mimi Lauter, will open on May 2. This marks Lauter's return to LA after an eight-year hiatus, a fact that excites Brown, who has long admired her work.

Having launched his gallery at just 23, Brown has quickly become a notable figure in the art world, previously recognized as a "wunderkind" by Artnet News. His gallery showcases a diverse roster of artists, including Uri Aran and Vincent Valdez, and has increasingly attracted attention for its innovative exhibitions.

Despite concerns from some art insiders about the future of LA's art scene, particularly after recent challenges, Brown remains optimistic. "For me, LA is home," he stated. "I have a long-term vision and truly believe in the potential of this city." This unwavering faith in Los Angeles may signal a bright future for the local art community, as new spaces and ideas continue to emerge.
