Google has unveiled exciting new AI features for its Chrome web browser, introducing a tool named Skills that empowers users to save and reuse their preferred AI prompts seamlessly across various webpages. This innovative addition aims to enhance productivity by eliminating the need for repetitive typing.
The Skills feature is part of Google's broader integration of its Gemini AI into Chrome, which has been launched amidst increasing competition from emerging browsers like OpenAI's Atlas, Perplexity's Comet, and The Browser Company's Dia.
Gemini already enables users to inquire about webpage content, summarize information, and execute a range of tasks. With Skills, users can now create personalized AI prompts that are easily accessible with a single click, enhancing the user experience significantly.
For example, if a user frequently seeks vegan substitutes while browsing recipe websites, they can now save that specific prompt for use across different sites, streamlining their culinary explorations.
To utilize this feature, users can save an AI prompt as a Skill directly from their chat history. They can then activate the Skill in Gemini by typing a forward slash (/) or clicking a plus sign (+), allowing it to function on the current webpage and any selected tabs. Google has also noted that these Skills can be modified at any time to better fit user needs.
In preliminary tests, users have engaged with Skills for diverse applications, such as calculating nutritional information in recipes, comparing shopping options, or summarizing lengthy documents, showcasing the feature's versatility.
To assist users in getting started, Google is launching a Skills library that offers a variety of common tasks and workflows across areas like productivity, shopping, recipes, and budgeting. Users can easily incorporate pre-programmed Skills into their saved list in Chrome and customize them as needed.
As with other Gemini functionalities, Skills will prompt users for confirmation before executing certain actions, such as sending emails or adding calendar events, ensuring a user-friendly experience.
The rollout of Skills begins today for Chrome desktop users logged into their Google accounts, initially available for those with their browser's language set to English (US).
This advancement in AI integration within browsers could redefine how users interact with online content, making workflows more efficient and personalized, ultimately shaping a future where technology adapts seamlessly to individual needs.
