AI leadership continues to move quickly, and Barret Zoph is the latest notable name to shift roles. After co-founding Thinking Machines and briefly returning to OpenAI, Zoph has now joined Google as vice president of research.
Zoph previously spent two years at OpenAI before leaving in October 2024 to help launch Thinking Machines with former OpenAI executive Mira Murati. In January, he and co-founder Luke Metz departed the startup and returned to OpenAI, where Zoph later took on a role focused on AI enterprise sales.
That chapter was short-lived. After about five months, Zoph left OpenAI in June and has now returned to Google, where he once worked before. According to Google, he will bring expertise in reinforcement learning and post-training to the company's Gemini efforts.
The move reflects how rapidly talent is circulating across the AI sector, especially among teams building frontier models and enterprise tools. As companies race to strengthen research and product capabilities, experienced leaders like Zoph are becoming central to the next phase of model development.
