Google is updating its Android app quality rules as the wider tech industry feels the effects of memory chip shortages linked to the rapid expansion of AI data centers. The new standards are designed to help apps stay efficient as device memory becomes more constrained.

Among the changes, Google is introducing fresh benchmarks for dynamic memory and bitmap usage, along with code optimization requirements aimed at improving stability and responsiveness. The goal is to reduce slowdowns and support smoother performance across Android devices, especially entry-level models.

To help developers adapt, Google is adding tools that can flag apps when they exceed the new limits. More advanced diagnostics are expected later this year, including deeper visibility through the Memory Limiter feature, which is built to keep apps from consuming too much device memory.

The company says the update reflects a changing hardware landscape and a push to preserve quality for users while developers work within tighter resource conditions. App and game makers have until February 2027 to meet the new memory standards.

Google is also setting a new requirement for Play Store apps: by April 2027, apps with sign-in features must restore user login states during device migration using the Android Restore Credentials API. The move is intended to make switching devices more seamless and consistent.

As Android continues to evolve, these changes may shape a more efficient app ecosystem built for smarter performance and smoother transitions across future devices.
