Google Earth Brings a Web-Based Flight Simulator to the Browser

Google Earth's web flight simulator turns browser-based map exploration into a simple 3D flying experience, offering instant access to global views without training.

Google Earth Brings a Web-Based Flight Simulator to the Browser

Google Earth has added a new flight simulator experience to its web version, making it easier for users to explore the planet from above. With only a few clicks, the feature lets people glide over cities, canyons, and landscapes directly in a browser.

The simulator is not entirely new. Google says the experience was adapted from the desktop version of Google Earth, where it had been tucked away as a more hidden feature. On the web, however, it is designed to be more accessible and immediate, with no training or setup required.

A simpler way to explore the globe

Users can open Google Earth on the web, select Explore Earth, and then choose Tools > Flight simulator. The controls work with either a keyboard or mouse, and the basic movements focus on direction and speed. Google also notes that the feature runs through the browser, so a modern Windows or macOS computer is recommended for smooth performance.

Because the experience streams large amounts of map data in real time, performance may vary depending on connection quality. Still, the appeal is clear: it offers a fast, visual way to travel across the world in 3D without the complexity of traditional simulation software.

As browser-based immersive tools continue to evolve, features like this may help make digital exploration more intuitive, playful, and widely accessible in the years ahead.
