Fitbit App Undergoes Major Changes: Features Transition and Account Migration

Google's Fitbit app is undergoing significant changes, including the removal of features and a mandatory transition to Google accounts, reshaping user experiences in health tracking.

Fitbit App Undergoes Major Changes: Features Transition and Account Migration

With the recent unveiling of the screenless Fitbit Air by Google, significant modifications are on the horizon for the Fitbit app and its device functionalities. As part of this transition, various features, including sleep animals and badges, will be phased out, prompting users to adapt to the new landscape.

Transitioning to Google Accounts

Following Google's acquisition of Fitbit, the company has been encouraging users to migrate from their original Fitbit accounts to Google accounts. This transition is no longer optional; by May 12, 2026, social features tied to Fitbit accounts will be disabled, and by July 15, 2026, all data associated with these accounts will be deleted. Users are urged to follow the provided guidelines for a seamless migration.

Discontinuation of Fitbit Forums

The well-established Fitbit forums, a resource for users since 2013, will also be eliminated. This change means that all post histories and profile data will be lost. While Google promises an updated community experience, it remains uncertain whether previous posts will be archived.

Removal of Badges and Sleep Animals

Users will no longer be able to earn badges, as all existing badges will be removed. Google emphasizes that users of Google Health Coach will receive support in tracking their achievements without the traditional badge system. Additionally, the beloved sleep animals feature will be discontinued.

Changes to Social Features

Several social functionalities within the Fitbit app are set to change:

  • Social profiles will now only reflect basic information from Google accounts, eliminating custom names and pictures.
  • Privacy settings will be restricted, with reduced information shared in social profiles.
  • Groups and Community feeds will be removed.
  • Direct messaging will no longer be available.
  • Kid accounts will not have the option to connect with friends.

Health Feature Modifications

As the Fitbit app transitions to Google Health, numerous health features will be altered or eliminated:

  • Cardio fitness will now be determined using VO2max, requiring GPS data.
  • Sleep profiles, including sleep animals, will be replaced by consultations with Google Health Coach.
  • Estimated Oxygen Variation (EOV) will be removed, though blood oxygen monitoring will remain accessible.
  • Snore detection will no longer be available.
  • Stress check graphs will be omitted, but individual results can still be scanned.
  • Minute-by-minute skin temperature tracking will be discontinued.
  • Blood glucose tracking will lose specific functionalities, although manual logging remains an option.
  • Food plans will no longer support calorie targets.
  • Recipes will be eliminated as a premium feature.
  • Lifescan devices will not connect to the app anymore.

While some features are being replaced by Google Health Coach suggestions, users may find the transition less structured than before. Nevertheless, Google aims to enhance the overall user experience with new offerings.
