New research suggests Asian elephants are not only strong problem-solvers, but also quick to adapt when a familiar method no longer works. In a study published in PLOS One, scientists tested how 16 elephants responded to a food puzzle designed to measure flexibility and self-control.

The experiment

The team at Thailand's National Elephant Institute placed fruit inside a clear acrylic cube with one open side. At first, the opening stayed in the same position long enough for the elephants to learn the route. Then the researchers rotated the box, moving the opening to a different side.

When that happened, the elephants initially slowed down, showing they were inclined to repeat the strategy that had just worked. But with more trials, they adjusted quickly and found the new opening faster each time.

According to the researchers, this pattern points to inhibitory control--the ability to pause an immediate response and choose a better one. It also suggests elephants can abandon a successful routine once the environment changes.

Why the test matters

The study included eight male and eight female elephants, ages 4 to 60, all living with caretakers at the Thai conservation facility. The animals first learned to detour around an opaque box, then faced a transparent version that let them see and smell the food directly ahead. They still chose the indirect path, but the clearest evidence of flexibility came when the opening moved.

After four trials in one position, the average time to enter jumped from about 2.2 seconds to 8.2 seconds after the opening shifted. By the final phase, when the opening changed on every trial, the elephants found it in about 4.5 seconds on average.

Researchers say the findings may help explain how elephants navigate changing landscapes and human-made barriers. Their ability to revise a plan on the fly could inform future conservation strategies and smarter ways to reduce human-elephant conflict. In the years ahead, this kind of insight may reshape how we understand animal intelligence and design coexistence in shared environments.
