Bluesky Plans Payments to Support Commerce and Fundraising

Bluesky plans to introduce payment features in the coming months, giving people a simpler way to support creators, buy from sellers and contribute to fundraisers on the network.

CEO Toni Schneider and COO Rose Wang say the initiative builds on activity already taking place among users. Payments are intended to work across Bluesky and other apps in its wider network, rather than being limited to a single service.

The company is exploring ways to generate revenue beyond advertising. As a Public Benefit Corporation, Bluesky says its mission will remain central to its business approach, with the aim of enabling people who create value online to benefit more directly from it.

Payments are described as an initial step in a broader effort to develop open social infrastructure and give users greater control over their digital identities and networks. If successful, the approach could help shape a more connected internet where commerce and support can move across platforms.
