Bluesky has introduced a new algorithmic opt-out option that gives users more control over how their public posts are surfaced in the app's Discover feed. The feature is designed for people who want to share content with followers without automatically reaching a wider audience.
The setting does not make posts private. Bluesky says public posts remain public by default, while this new control simply reduces their visibility to users outside a person's existing network. The company is still developing privacy support at the protocol level.
Users can activate the option through the app's Privacy and Security settings. Once enabled, the preference may take up to an hour to fully apply. Bluesky also notes that the choice is stored at the account level, so it can follow the user across other apps built on the same AT Protocol.
That broader design gives the feature a wider reach than a single app setting, although other AT Protocol-based apps can still decide whether to respect it. The move reflects a growing focus on user choice, visibility controls, and more personalized social sharing.
As social platforms evolve, features like this may help shape a more intentional and flexible digital public space.
