Bluesky has formalized a leadership shift by appointing Toni Schneider as its permanent chief executive, ending his four-month interim tenure. Schneider, the founding CEO of Automattic, had stepped in after Jay Graber moved from CEO to chief innovation officer in March.
In a post on his personal blog, Schneider said the transition reflects both confidence in the role and commitment to the platform's direction. He described Bluesky's mission as one he is fully embracing, signaling a long-term focus on product development and community growth.
Next phase for the platform
One of Schneider's first priorities is to build smaller spaces and more private communities, a move he believes could open the door to the next wave of innovation. The company's broader challenge is to strengthen engagement while continuing to expand its decentralized social network model.
Bluesky, originally spun out of Twitter, has grown rapidly in recent years and now counts tens of millions of users. Its underlying AT Protocol remains a key part of its identity, allowing different apps to connect through shared social infrastructure.
With a permanent CEO in place, Bluesky enters a new chapter focused on refining its product and deepening user experience. If successful, this leadership shift could help shape the future of open social platforms.
