Android 17 arrives with smarter multitasking and expanded Gemini tools

Google has released the final version of Android 17 alongside Wear OS 7, starting with Pixel devices and a new Pixel Drop that broadens the role of Gemini across phones and watches. The update brings fresh AI-powered experiences, including music creation with Lyria 3, conversational video editing through Gemini Omni, and improved speech translation on Pixel 10a devices with AudioLM.

The release also highlights Google's push to make Android a showcase for its latest intelligent features. On the productivity side, a new bubble bar helps users organize recent apps more fluidly, making it easier to switch between tasks and manage multiple workflows at once.

Several practical tools are joining the Pixel ecosystem. Quick Share is becoming compatible with Apple's AirDrop on older Pixel 8a and 9a models, while users can now record custom voicemail-style greetings for missed calls. The "Take a Message" function is also expanding to more markets.

On Pixel Watch, emergency detection gains added capability by recognizing events such as car crashes, falls, or pulse loss and then contacting emergency services and chosen contacts automatically. Google has also upgraded parental controls, including Find Hub's Mark as Lost option, Live Threat Detection, screen time limits, and PIN-based content filters that do not require a Google account.

For creators and gamers, Android 17 adds a dual-camera recording mode for reaction videos and a new foldable gaming layout with a dynamic gamepad. Wear OS is also set to gain more Gemini features this summer, including personalized widgets created from text prompts, deeper app integration, and battery improvements of up to 10%, according to Google.

With Android 17, Google is shaping a more connected device experience where AI, mobility, and multitasking converge, pointing toward a future of more intuitive personal technology.
