Ancient Stone Altar and Human Remains Unearthed in Central Mexico

In a significant archaeological find, researchers engaged in a salvage project for a passenger train route between Querétaro and Mexico City have uncovered a stone altar dating back approximately 1,000 years. This remarkable discovery was made within the Tula Archaeological Monument Zone, a site renowned for its Toltec heritage, located in the central state of Hidalgo, as reported by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).

The excavation revealed a three-tiered altar, measuring about three feet on each side, constructed from andesite, river stones, and basalt rock. Surrounding the altar were four human skulls and several long bones, identified as femurs. The findings also included a black ceramic bowl and various obsidian fragments and blades.

Claudia Curiel de Icaza, Mexico's Secretary of Culture, emphasized the importance of such discoveries, stating, "Each discovery like this expands our knowledge of one of the great civilizations of Mesoamerica." She highlighted that this project reflects the commitment to preserve and share Mexico's archaeological heritage with current and future generations.

According to Víctor Francisco Heredia Guillén, the project supervisor, the remains likely belong to individuals who were offered as sacrifices, a common practice in ancient Mesoamerican cultures. A state laboratory in Mexico is expected to provide further insights into the remains, including information regarding their age, sex, and potential cause of death.

This discovery not only enriches our understanding of the Toltec civilization but also reinforces the significance of archaeological research in uncovering the cultural narratives of past societies. As we continue to explore these ancient sites, we gain invaluable perspectives on human history and the evolution of civilizations.
