Artificial intelligence is reshaping weather forecasting, making advanced simulations possible on everyday laptops and opening the door to faster, more practical predictions. The next frontier is not only accuracy, but also turning those forecasts into real-world value.
WindBorne Systems, a startup founded in 2019, is building that bridge with a network of long-endurance weather balloons and low-cost sensors. The company has secured a $37 million Series B round to expand its platform and commercial reach, according to CEO John Dean.
The round was co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, with participation from TransLink Capital, Lux Capital and earlier backers. The new valuation places WindBorne at $250 million.
Today, the company operates 20 launch sites and keeps roughly 600 balloons airborne at a time, collecting data from difficult-to-measure regions. It is also testing sensor packages that can descend into the ocean and continue gathering information as floating buoys.
WindBorne's model combines its proprietary data with information from government weather agencies around the world. The company says this approach improves forecast quality and strengthens the value of each data point.
Its current customers include the U.S. National Weather Service, while the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy use the data through research partnerships. The company is now preparing for broader private-sector adoption, especially among investment firms and businesses that rely on weather-linked decisions.
As AI lowers the cost and complexity of turning climate data into action, weather intelligence could become a more accessible tool for industries, researchers and decision-makers worldwide.
