WindBorne Secures U.S. Air Force Contract for Global Weather Data

Balloon network to support weather intelligence

WindBorne Systems has secured a U.S. Air Force contract worth up to $49 million for atmospheric data gathered by its autonomous weather-balloon network. The Air Force pays for data as needed, ordering coverage for particular regions and times. Orders so far total $1.7 million.

The company operates around 700 balloons worldwide. Their sensors collect atmospheric readings that WindBorne sells to customers and uses to inform its AI-based forecasting model. The contract is the largest the company has taken part in and is expected to help expand its balloon fleet and fund improvements to its equipment and research.

AI forecasting meets real-world observations

WindBorne's latest model, WeatherMesh 6, uses deep learning to generate forecasts from weather data. The approach complements traditional forecasting, which relies on physics-based simulations, and can produce predictions more quickly. Both methods remain part of the broader effort to improve understanding of weather patterns.

The balloons can adjust altitude to move with different wind currents. In August, WindBorne used this capability to guide an unpowered balloon into a typhoon's eye, demonstrating how weather models and a large fleet can support navigation decisions.

As balloon networks deliver more direct atmospheric measurements, they could help make weather forecasting more detailed and responsive in the years ahead.
