The Joan Mitchell Foundation has announced 15 visual artists as the 2026 recipients of its fellowship program, one of the most respected support initiatives for artists in the United States. Each fellow will receive $60,000 in unrestricted funding spread across five years, designed to encourage long-term creative growth.
This year's cohort includes artists working across a wide range of practices and geographies: Krista Clark, Cameron Clayborn, Sarah Elizabeth Cornejo, Beatriz Cortez, Azza El Siddique, Sam Frésquez, Coulter Fussell, vanessa german, Porfirio Gutierrez, Roscoe Hall, Janet Olivia Henry, Erica Lord, Rob Rhee, Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, and Dianna Settles.
Among them, Beatriz Cortez highlighted the value of steady support for ambitious, large-scale work. The El Salvador-born, Los Angeles-based artist, now teaching at the University of California, Davis, said the fellowship offers the stability needed to expand her practice and explore new materials and methods.
Other fellows described practical ways the funding will strengthen their studios and production. Some plan to hire assistants, secure workspace, or invest in transportation for larger materials, while others will use the award to build more conceptually integrated bodies of work over time.
Janet Olivia Henry, the oldest recipient at 79, pointed to another dimension of artistic sustainability: organizing archives, documentation, and legacy planning. Her perspective reflects how the fellowship supports both current creation and long-view stewardship of artistic work.
Launched in 2021, the program replaced one-time grants with a model centered on continuity, peer exchange, and professional development. The foundation says its annual commitment reaches about $1.3 million per cohort, underscoring a growing belief that artistic careers thrive when support is consistent and trust-based.
As more institutions embrace flexible funding for creators, this model could help shape a future where artistic innovation develops with greater freedom and resilience.
