U.S.-based startup Zipline, renowned for its autonomous drone delivery services, has successfully raised an impressive $200 million, enhancing a funding round initially disclosed in January. This additional capital elevates the total of Zipline's Series H funding to $800 million.
Founder and CEO Keller Clifton shared insights in a video update, noting, "Things have moved a little faster than we expected." The funding round attracted significant investment from prominent firms, including Paradigm, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Baillie Gifford, Valor Equity Partners, and Tiger Global, which collectively valued the company at approximately $7.6 billion.
Zipline has created a comprehensive drone delivery ecosystem that encompasses the aircraft, launch and landing systems, along with advanced logistics software. Initially established in 2014 in Africa, the company gained recognition for its innovative approach to delivering blood supplies in Rwanda. Over the years, Zipline has broadened its scope, now delivering a variety of products including food, retail items, agricultural supplies, and health products across five African nations, select U.S. cities, and Japan.
The newly acquired funds are aimed at accelerating Zipline's expansion into at least four additional U.S. states this year, with Houston, Phoenix, and Seattle already identified as new markets. Clifton highlighted the remarkable growth of their home delivery service launched last year, indicating that delivery volumes exceeded expectations in the early months of this year.
"We're actually expecting to accelerate our growth over the next three months, relative to 2025," Clifton stated, attributing this surge to customers increasingly utilizing the drones for multiple daily orders and larger purchases.
In a recent development, the average order size has reportedly increased by over 20% within just three weeks, prompting the company to double the number of brands available on its app in the upcoming month. Zipline's Platform 2 drones are designed to carry up to eight pounds, servicing customers within a 10-mile radius, while larger Platform 1 drones cater to enterprise and government needs with a range of 120 miles.
Despite its focus on U.S. expansion, Zipline remains committed to international growth. Clifton announced a new national-scale contract in Rwanda, facilitating the launch of its Platform 2 delivery service in major cities. Additionally, the company is set to open a third distribution center to ensure comprehensive service to every hospital and health facility in the country.
