Retro, the friend-centered photo-sharing app created by former Instagram product engineers Nathan Sharp and Ryan Olson, has secured more than $21 million in Series A funding, according to an SEC filing. The round signals continued investor confidence in social products built around real connections rather than algorithm-driven feeds.
Launched in 2023 as a private photo journal, Retro has evolved into a more collaborative space for close circles. Users can share weekly moments, build shared albums, browse recaps, and use the app's rewind feature to revisit memories from their camera roll.
The company has also taken a different path on monetization. Instead of relying on ads, Retro offers subscriptions with extras such as video, GIF and sticker comments, unlimited history, custom app icons, and expanded styling options. That model appears to be resonating: Appfigures estimates the app has been downloaded about 7 million times, while in-app spending has climbed sharply over the past six months.
Pitchbook now values the startup at more than $100 million, reflecting growing interest in intimate, utility-driven social platforms. Backers include Thrive Capital, Figma CEO Dylan Field, Scribble Ventures, Box Group, Imaginary Ventures, Coalition, Conviction, Copper, Positive Sum, and several angel investors.
As digital sharing continues to shift toward smaller, more meaningful communities, apps like Retro may help define a more personal future for social media.
