Zeno has raised $25 million to expand its battery-swap network and boost production of electric motorbikes, tapping into the growing East African market for sustainable transport solutions.

Zeno Secures $25 Million to Accelerate Battery-Swap Motorbike Production

The transition to electric vehicles is gaining momentum in East Africa, with startups like Zeno leading the charge in the electric motorbike sector. Recently, Zeno announced a successful $25 million Series A funding round aimed at enhancing its app-controlled battery-swap network and ramping up production of its Emara motorcycles.

According to Zeno's co-founder and CEO, Michael Spencer, approximately $20.5 million of the funding comes from equity investments, primarily led by Congruent Ventures, with contributions from Active Impact and Lowercarbon Ventures. The remaining $4.5 million is structured as a debt facility from Camber Road and Trifecta Capital.

Previously, Zeno had raised $9.5 million in seed funding, with support from Lowercarbon Ventures and Toyota Ventures. Since its launch a year and a half ago, Zeno has successfully produced over 800 Emara motorbikes and established more than 150 battery-swap stations across four East African nations.

Motorbikes are a vital transportation mode in this region, and Zeno aims to attract riders by offering operating costs that are 50% lower than traditional internal combustion engines. Currently, the company reports that more than 25,000 retail and fleet customers are eager to purchase an Emara, with production rates of 70 to 80 bikes per week. This new funding will help meet the growing demand.

The Emara boasts a range of impressive features, including a single-charge range of approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) and a carrying capacity of up to 250 kilograms (550 pounds). The motorbike is priced at around $1,300 without a battery and about $2,000 with one.

Delivering 8 kilowatts of peak power, the Emara matches the performance of a 150 cc internal combustion engine, providing instant torque for tackling steep hills. This feature is particularly beneficial for bodaboda operators, who frequently transport passengers and goods. Buyers can choose to purchase the bike without a battery and opt for a subscription plan for battery use, allowing them to charge at home or at Zeno's swap stations.

In addition to the motorbikes, Zeno plans to introduce a battery dock that can power lights and appliances for homes and businesses. This innovative solution is currently in prototype testing with select customers and could position Zeno as a key player in the region's electrical infrastructure, especially in areas where the power grid is underdeveloped.

Spencer's vision for Zeno is influenced by his experience at Tesla, focusing on the potential for electric vehicles and clean energy in emerging markets. He believes that these markets present unique opportunities with fewer barriers to entry, allowing for significant growth and innovation.
