YouTube, owned by Alphabet, continues to show impressive growth in its subscription and advertising revenue. Recently, the platform announced it has reached 325 million paying subscribers for Google One and YouTube Premium, a significant increase from 300 million just three months prior.
In the fourth quarter, YouTube's advertising revenue rose by 9% to $11.38 billion, although it fell short of analysts' expectations, which were set at $11.84 billion. Over the entire fiscal year, YouTube generated a remarkable $60 billion in total revenue, marking a 17% increase compared to the previous year.
The company highlighted that its $8 monthly ad-free premium subscription tier is gaining momentum, although specific user numbers were not disclosed. Additionally, growth in YouTube Premium has been noteworthy.
Alphabet's CEO, Sundar Pichai, expressed plans to enhance the subscription offerings, particularly to leverage the expanding YouTube TV audience. "We're preparing to introduce new YouTube TV plans, providing subscribers with over 10 genre-specific packages for greater choice and flexibility," he stated.
During the quarter, YouTube Shorts maintained an impressive average of 200 billion daily views, consistent with last year. Interestingly, in certain regions, advertisements on short-form videos have proven to be more lucrative than traditional in-stream ads. Pichai also noted the rising popularity of podcasts, with viewers reportedly consuming 700 million hours of podcasts on their TVs in October.
YouTube is witnessing growth in its AI capabilities, with over 1 million channels utilizing its AI creation tools. In December, 20 million users engaged with its Gemini-powered content discovery tool.
