The Internet Archive, a dedicated non-profit organization focused on preserving the digital landscape, has recently unveiled a new tool aimed at enhancing its mission. This innovative tool is particularly beneficial for WordPress users, ensuring their articles remain in optimal digital condition.
The Wayback Machine, a service that archives web pages through extensive snapshotting, has collaborated with Automattic, the driving force behind WordPress. Together, they have rolled out a new plugin named Link Fixer, specifically designed to tackle the prevalent issue of "link rot."
"Link rot" refers to the frustrating occurrence where online articles become cluttered with broken links--URLs that once directed users to active content but now lead to error pages or dead ends. A study conducted by Pew Research in 2024 highlighted that nearly 40% of links from 2013 are no longer functional. This phenomenon of "digital decay" affects a wide range of web pages, including news sites, government portals, Wikipedia entries, and social media posts.
According to Automattic, this new plugin operates by scanning WordPress posts for outbound links and cross-referencing them with the Wayback Machine for archived versions. If no archived version exists, the plugin will automatically create new snapshots of the relevant articles. In the event that a linked webpage becomes unavailable, the feature will seamlessly redirect users to the archived versions, ensuring uninterrupted access. Additionally, the tool archives the user's own posts, contributing to their long-term preservation.
The primary goal of this tool is to keep visitors engaged with the most current version of a webpage. Automattic's plugin continuously monitors the links, and if an original link that had previously gone offline becomes active again, it will redirect users back to that original page instead of the archived version.
A detailed overview available on GitHub indicates that the plugin's interface is user-friendly and allows for convenient customization. Users can set preferences for how frequently they wish the plugin to check the validity of links, with the default setting being every three days.
