Truecaller, renowned for its caller ID services, has officially entered the eSIM market, aiming to provide seamless connectivity for travelers. This strategic move comes as the company seeks to enhance its financial performance and diversify its offerings amidst a decline in advertising revenues.
The initial eSIM plans will cater to a range of data needs, offering options from 1 GB over 7 days to 20 GB over 30 days. Truecaller will launch this service in 29 countries, including major markets such as Italy, Sweden, Spain, France, Germany, and the United States, among others.
Interestingly, India, Truecaller's largest market, is not included in the initial rollout, likely due to stringent telecommunications regulations in the country. Previous attempts by companies like Airalo and Holafly to operate in India faced challenges related to regulatory compliance.
To facilitate its eSIM platform, Truecaller is collaborating with global cellular connectivity provider Telna and telecom software company Telness Tech. With existing competitors in the eSIM space such as Airalo and Roamless, Truecaller believes that its extensive user base of over 500 million will give it a competitive edge in attracting new customers.
Fredrik Kjell, the company's chief operating officer, emphasized the advantage of Truecaller's established audience, stating, "We are offering travel eSIM inside our app that over 500 million people already use and trust every month." This existing relationship with users is expected to enhance distribution and pricing strategies.
Kjell further noted that this initiative is designed to make the Truecaller app more functional for users, especially during a pivotal time for the company. Recently, Truecaller announced job cuts across various teams and reported a 27% drop in net sales for Q1 2026, alongside a significant decline in ad revenues.
In response to these challenges, Truecaller is focusing on boosting subscription revenues through innovative features such as an AI Assistant and Family Protection. The introduction of eSIM services is viewed as a promising avenue for generating new revenue streams during a period of fluctuating ad income.
As the demand for eSIM technology continues to grow, driven by travel needs and device compatibility, Truecaller's entry into this market reflects a broader trend. Recent investments in eSIM startups indicate a burgeoning interest in this sector, paving the way for future advancements in mobile connectivity.
