Spotify Launches Studio App to Compete in Podcast Generation

Spotify has launched its new Studio app, allowing users to create personalized podcasts and compete with existing platforms like Google's NotebookLM.

Spotify Launches Studio App to Compete in Podcast Generation

In the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, companies are increasingly integrating various services--such as emails, calendars, and notes--to deliver personalized daily briefings in text or audio formats. Spotify is joining this trend with the introduction of its new standalone desktop application, Studio by Spotify Labs.

This innovative app enables users to delve into topics by creating personalized podcasts. It incorporates a unique feature that adds personal context to the podcast generation process. As the demand for intelligent applications grows, Spotify has included a browsing agent within the Studio app that can gather information from the web to craft tailored podcasts.

For example, users can request a daily audio briefing or a podcast based on their email and calendar events. A multistep command could look like: "Generate an audio brief for my road trip through Italy, detailing my schedule and bookings, suggesting a memorable dinner spot nearby, and concluding with a podcast recommendation for the drive." This functionality allows for a seamless blend of personal insights and curated content.

All AI-generated podcasts are saved within the user's Spotify library, ensuring easy access across devices, although they remain private and not publicly accessible.

Spotify has launched this app in a research preview phase across over 20 markets, targeting users aged 18 and older. While it promises exciting capabilities, the company has cautioned that this is an early iteration, and users may encounter occasional inaccuracies in AI-generated content.

This new tool positions Spotify in direct competition with Google's NotebookLM, which has been a pioneer in podcast generation based on selected source material. Other companies, including Adobe and ElevenLabs, have also embraced this format, showcasing the growing popularity of personalized audio content.

Spotify's introduction of the Studio app follows its recent launch of a command-line tool designed for coding users, allowing them to create personal podcasts as well. With the new Studio app, non-coders can now also enjoy these advanced capabilities.

This launch exemplifies Spotify's ambition to become a central player in the audio space. The desktop app could pave the way for future integrations aimed at enhancing podcast creation. Speculatively, Spotify may also explore features that capture system audio, expanding into areas such as meeting note-taking, similar to emerging startups.
