Sweden's startup scene gains fresh momentum as founders and investors return

Sweden is strengthening its position as one of Europe's most dynamic startup centers, with Stockholm at the heart of the momentum. The country, already known for companies such as Spotify and Klarna, is now producing a new generation of fast-rising names including Legora, Lovable, Neko Health and Einride.

According to Dealroom, Swedish startups have raised $2.8 billion so far this year, with the total projected to reach at least $5 billion. That follows $3.2 billion last year, after the ecosystem peaked at $8.5 billion in 2021 during a stronger global funding cycle. The latest figures suggest renewed confidence in the market.

Sophia Bendz, general partner at Cherry Ventures, says one of the biggest shifts is cultural: building a company has become an attractive career path. In earlier years, many ambitious young professionals aimed for banking or consulting. Today, more founders are choosing to create products, pursue independence, and build long-term value.

Another key driver is the strength of the first generation of Swedish tech entrepreneurs. Many are now mentoring new founders, sharing experience, and in some cases launching new ventures themselves. Daniel Ek, the Spotify co-founder, is also behind Neko Health, reflecting how established builders continue to shape the next wave.

The ecosystem is also feeding itself through talent movement. People who have worked at companies like Lovable and Legora are increasingly launching their own startups, bringing technical know-how and a strong entrepreneurial mindset into the market.

International attention is growing as well, with more American investors traveling to Stockholm to meet founders and explore opportunities. The trend highlights Sweden's ability to combine innovation, talent, and ambition in a compact but influential ecosystem. The coming years could see Stockholm play an even larger role in Europe's startup future.
