Spotify has officially introduced its innovative AI-powered feature, "Prompted Playlists," to Premium subscribers in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. This follows its successful testing phase in New Zealand and recent launches in the U.S. and Canada.
With Prompted Playlists, users can effortlessly craft personalized playlists by articulating their musical desires in their own words. Rather than sifting through individual songs or artists, they can express the mood, situation, or inspiration they seek, allowing Spotify to handle the rest.
To utilize this feature, users simply tap "Create," select "Prompted Playlist," and enter their prompt in English. The AI is adept at interpreting a range of themes, from emotions and aesthetics to personal memories. Prompts can vary widely, referencing musical genres, eras, activities, lyrics, or even themes from favorite TV shows or movies. Users also have the option to indicate whether they prefer new music or selections from their existing library.
Upon submission, Spotify's AI curates a unique playlist tailored to the user's request, drawing from their listening history alongside current music trends. Each song includes a brief explanation, providing insight into its selection for the playlist.
Users can modify their playlists by adjusting prompts or starting anew. For those whose musical preferences shift frequently, there's an option to schedule automatic updates to playlists on a daily or weekly basis.
As this feature is still in beta, Spotify has indicated that adjustments may occur based on user feedback, and there are currently limits on usage. Some users have reported reaching limits after approximately 20 to 30 prompts.
In addition to Prompted Playlists, Spotify has been enhancing its platform with various AI features, including "Page Match," which allows users to scan a physical book page to access the corresponding audiobook section, and "About This Song," which provides context behind the tracks. The service has also improved its lyrics feature to offer global translations and offline access. Recently, Spotify partnered with SeatGeek, enabling users to find concert ticket links directly within artist pages.
Internally, Spotify has integrated AI across its operations, with co-CEO Gustav Söderström noting that the company's top developers have not needed to write code since December, thanks to AI advancements. Furthermore, Spotify is expanding its audiobook offerings by introducing the option for users in the U.S. and U.K. to purchase physical books directly through the app.
