A spent SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage has created a new crater on the Moon, offering scientists a rare chance to study a human-made impact in detail. The event, which took place on August 5, 2026, was later confirmed through close observations from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).

A precise lunar observation

The crater measures about 60 feet across and is less than 10 feet deep, yet capturing it was a technical achievement. LRO circles the Moon every two hours, and mission teams had to carefully adjust its angle, then wait for the Moon's rotation to bring the site into view. The timing window was extremely narrow, but the spacecraft's Narrow-Angle Camera delivered a sharp look at the fresh scar.

The images show an unusual spray pattern around the impact zone. Some streaks appear brighter, while others are darker than the surrounding surface. Scientists say the darker material likely came from long-exposed lunar dust and rock that had been altered over time by solar wind and micrometeorites. The brighter streaks may reveal fresher material from deeper below the surface, effectively turning the impact into an accidental geological sample.

Tracking the impact like a celestial object

The crater was identified through a combination of public tracking data and orbital analysis. NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies treated the rocket stage like a small artificial asteroid, refining its path and narrowing the impact zone. South Korea's Danuri lunar orbiter then captured the site shortly after impact, helping confirm the location with impressive accuracy.

Beyond the science, the event highlights a growing frontier in space operations. As lunar missions increase, tracking discarded hardware around the Earth-Moon system is becoming more important. At the same time, each fresh crater adds valuable insight into what lies beneath the Moon's surface. This kind of observation may help shape safer, smarter exploration in the years ahead.
