SpaceX Reportedly Eyes Boost Mobile to Expand Its Hybrid Network

SpaceX is reportedly considering a purchase of Boost Mobile, a move that could bring the company closer to building a nationwide network combining satellite and cellular connectivity. The potential deal would also give SpaceX a foothold in the U.S. mobile market alongside established carriers.

The company has been developing satellite-to-phone services through Starlink and acquired wireless spectrum from EchoStar in 2025. Buying Boost could add access to terrestrial network capacity, helping connect devices in places where satellite signals are limited, including indoors.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk reportedly discussed the possibility with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen in October. Boost Mobile leases network capacity rather than operating its own cell towers, and agreements with its network partners may affect whether a sale can proceed. EchoStar has about 7.5 million customers across Boost Mobile and GenMobile.

A combined approach could use cell towers where available and satellites to extend coverage beyond them. If realized, the strategy may help shape a future in which mobile connectivity moves more seamlessly between ground-based and space-based networks.
