SpaceX has secured a binding commitment for approximately $40 billion in financing for AI chips and data-center equipment, in a deal the company describes as the largest committed GPU financing to date.
Under the agreement, an entity managed by Apollo Global Management will purchase the hardware and lease it to SpaceX for about five to five-and-a-quarter years. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to closing conditions, with leases beginning as equipment arrives in the first half of 2027.
Building AI computing capacity
The financing is intended to support SpaceX's expanding AI infrastructure, including computing capacity for Grok and its cloud services. Apollo said the arrangement will help deliver Nvidia's next-generation Vera Rubin chips for SpaceX's data-center expansion.
SpaceX says the lease diversifies its funding sources as it scales its computing operations alongside Starlink and launch services. The company's chief financial officer has also said its AI infrastructure investments are expected to have payback periods of less than a year.
As advanced chips and data centers become central to AI services, large-scale financing arrangements like this could help shape how quickly computing capacity expands.
