Shade Secures $14 Million to Revolutionize Media File Search for Creative Teams

Creative and marketing teams often find standard cloud storage solutions inadequate for their needs. The challenge of locating specific files is exacerbated by the rapid increase in media content generated by AI, making the search process more complex.

New York-based startup Shade is addressing this issue with a cloud storage platform tailored for agencies, sports media teams, consumer brands, real estate firms, and podcasters, enabling straightforward media file storage and search.

Recently, Shade announced the successful completion of a $14 million funding round led by Khosla Ventures, Construct Capital, and Bling Capital. This brings their total funding to $20 million since their inception in 2024, with notable investors including General Catalyst, SignalFire, and Contrary.

Co-founders Brandon Fan and Emerson Dove, who have been friends since high school, created Shade out of frustration with existing tools like Dropbox, which they found inefficient for file searches. "We built it out of our frustration as creatives," Fan explained, emphasizing the need for a unified source of truth in file management.

Shade distinguishes itself with two key features. Firstly, it employs natural language search with auto-tagging capabilities, allowing users to find precise moments in videos that match their queries. For example, searching for "a person holding a laptop in snow" will yield relevant clips with timestamps.

Secondly, Shade's "streamable" file system allows users to access files without waiting for full downloads, facilitating immediate work on projects. This innovative approach contrasts with traditional systems like Google Drive, which require complete downloads before editing.

Collaboration is seamless on Shade, as teams can provide feedback linked to specific video timestamps and attach files within comments. They can also create multiple links for the same assets with varying permission levels, enhancing team dynamics.

For client deliveries, teams can compile branded file collections with password protection and expiration features. Shade offers an affordable plan at $20 per seat per month, which includes unlimited drives, AI indexing, and 500GB of active storage.

While Shade is not the only player in this space, with competitors like Poly and Memories.ai emerging, it stands out for its comprehensive approach to file management. Keith Rabois from Khosla Ventures noted that Shade's unique architecture integrates streaming, indexing, and collaboration into one system, setting it apart from traditional storage solutions.

Looking ahead, Shade plans to enhance its search capabilities across various file types and is developing a no-code platform to empower creative teams to automate workflows effortlessly.

As Shade continues to innovate, it has the potential to transform how creative teams manage and collaborate on media files, paving the way for more efficient workflows in the future.
