Leveraging the AT Protocol, the same open-source framework that drives the alternative social platform Bluesky, Periwinkle provides essential infrastructure for users to manage their own social media presence.
This means users can establish accounts on their own domains, whether on Bluesky or through tailored hosted solutions for specific organizations or communities. Periwinkle facilitates domain purchases and enables users to store their data--including posts, followers, and profiles--on their own Personal Data Server (PDS), integral to the AT Protocol ecosystem.
Periwinkle streamlines the transition for non-technical users, alleviating the burden of server setup and maintenance. The company ensures that user servers are consistently updated, backed up, and monitored, allowing individuals to concentrate on engaging with their social media.
According to Periwinkle's founder, Charles Blumenthal, "We'll be the first-to-market fully managed PDS service; there is nobody else that is doing this right now." While alternatives exist, such as Blacksky, Periwinkle distinguishes itself by focusing on user-friendly social media management.
Blumenthal, a former software engineer at McKinsey, conceived this idea upon realizing that many potential users were unaware of the advantages offered by the AT Protocol.
