OpenAI has appointed Paul Christiano to the OpenAI Foundation board, bringing one of the field's best-known AI alignment researchers into its governance structure.
Christiano, who helped shape reinforcement learning from human feedback, said the rapid rise of AI capabilities could create serious risks if systems move beyond human control. He argued that stronger safeguards are needed as models become more capable and more autonomous.
He will join the board's Safety and Security Committee, which has a decisive role in reviewing whether new models are ready for release. The move comes as the industry continues to refine how advanced systems are tested, monitored, and aligned with human goals.
After leaving OpenAI in 2021, Christiano founded the Alignment Research Center and later became affiliated with the U.S. government's AI Safety Institute, now known as the Center for AI Standards and Innovation. In his new role, he is expected to continue advising the government while recusing himself from OpenAI-specific evaluations.
The appointment highlights how safety research is becoming a central part of AI leadership. As frontier models grow more powerful, governance, transparency, and alignment may define the next era of responsible innovation.
