Microsoft generated $10 billion from commercial arrangements with OpenAI in the quarter ended September 30, according to a regulatory filing. That amounted to nearly 11% of Microsoft's $92.3 billion in total quarterly revenue.
For fiscal 2026, Microsoft reported $24.1 billion in revenue from its OpenAI arrangements. The company did not break down how much came from revenue-sharing payments versus Azure cloud services. It also disclosed that OpenAI owed it $7.2 billion at the end of September, up from $6 billion in June. These receivables relate to previous transactions and are separate from revenue.
The companies' evolving agreement includes OpenAI continuing to share revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap. OpenAI has also committed to purchasing an additional $250 billion in Azure services, while gaining the ability to work with other cloud providers.
Microsoft's ownership stake in OpenAI slipped from about 25% in June to 24% in September. The filing did not explain the change.
The scale of these arrangements shows how closely cloud infrastructure and AI businesses are linked. Their evolution may help shape how advanced AI services are funded, hosted, and brought to market.
