Notion Mail to End as the Company Doubles Down on AI Agents

Notion will discontinue Notion Mail on September 22 as it shifts focus toward its AI agent tools. The company says user behavior has changed quickly, with many people now letting agents handle email tasks without even opening their inboxes.

According to Notion, more than half of Notion Mail users already manage messages through automation rather than a traditional inbox view. That shift is now shaping the company's next phase, with email workflows increasingly designed around AI assistance instead of manual sorting.

Existing Gmail connections will remain active, so inbox messages will stay available after the shutdown. Users who want to preserve drafts or scheduled emails will need to export them. Notion also said snippets and auto-labeling rules can be saved and reused elsewhere, while its email-based agents will continue operating.

The product first appeared in preview in 2024 after Notion acquired Skiff, a security-focused productivity startup. It later expanded in 2025 with tools for labeling, filtering, and scheduling, aiming to compete in the smarter email management space. The move also reflects a broader industry trend: building software that acts more like a digital assistant than a traditional app.

As AI agents become more capable, inboxes may evolve from places we manage manually into systems that organize work proactively, shaping the next generation of productivity.
