Nick Baumgartner is a dedicated snowboarder who attributes much of his success in the Olympic snowboard cross event to another thrilling sport: mountain biking. This extreme sport serves as a vital training ground, allowing him to simulate the racing dynamics he faces on snow.
"It closely mimics what I experience on the slopes," says the four-time Olympian. "Training my vision to look ahead is crucial--anticipating the race ahead enables me to increase my speed."
Baumgartner's regimen extends beyond the slopes; he also engages in rigorous gym workouts, emphasizing squats. However, he approaches strength training with a modern twist, utilizing advanced technology. By incorporating sensors on his barbell, he monitors bar speed to ensure optimal performance. "I focus on pushing the weight at a specific speed, which helps me stay aware of my fatigue levels and avoid injuries," he explains. "My training is strategic, not just about lifting weights."
Despite his intense training routine, Baumgartner remains passionate about snowboard cross, which he believes is uniquely exhilarating due to its blend of speed and strategy. "It's the most thrilling sport out there," he asserts. "Drafting plays a significant role; the lead racer blocks the wind, allowing others to gain speed and make strategic moves to win."
To maintain his explosive power, crucial for his athletic performance, Baumgartner recommends a training tip: once a week, instead of lifting maximum weights for lower body exercises, reduce the load to half and focus on explosive movements. "Record your sets and monitor your speed--if it takes longer than two seconds to lift, you might be lifting too heavy for explosive training," he advises.
