A significant archaeological find has emerged in northeastern Egypt, where the upper half of a massive statue of the ancient king Ramses II was uncovered at the site known as Tell El-Faraoun. This impressive fragment weighs over 5 tons and stands approximately 7 feet tall.
According to reports from Ahram Online, this statue is believed to be one of three that once adorned a temple, although it was not originally part of the temple at Tell El-Faraoun. Experts speculate that it was initially crafted for a temple in Per-Ramesses, an ancient capital established by Ramses II during the 13th century BCE.
Hisham El-Leithy, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, highlighted the importance of this discovery, stating, "The find provides valuable evidence of how statues were relocated and repurposed during the New Kingdom, particularly in regional centers connected to major royal capitals."
Ramses II, who reigned from approximately 1279 BCE to 1213 BCE, is often regarded as one of Egypt's most powerful pharaohs. His legacy includes the Ramesseum, a grand funerary temple located near Luxor. In a separate but related discovery earlier this year, a 12.5-foot-tall section of a Ramses II statue was found at El Ashmunein as part of an Egyptian-American mission, believed to correspond with a lower section discovered in 1930 by German archaeologist Gunther Roeder.
The newly found statue fragment has been swiftly transported to a storage facility in San El-Hagar, located about 10 miles north of the discovery site, ensuring its preservation and further study.
