Egypt Seeks Return of Nekht's Ancient Remains from Glasgow Museum

Egypt has formally requested the return of Nekht's mummified remains, held by Glasgow's Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. The request follows the museum's decision to remove the ancient remains from public display in October.

Nekht lived between approximately 1985 and 1797 BCE. The museum replaced the display with a notice explaining that human remains had been taken off view as a mark of respect. Its curators said they did not have consent to continue exhibiting them.

Glasgow Life, the charity that manages the museum, confirmed it had received a repatriation request and said it would follow the city's established process to determine next steps.

Other human remains in the museum's collection have also been removed from display and are being kept in storage. The museum has not indicated that those remains are subject to repatriation requests.

The case highlights how museums are reassessing the display and care of ancient human remains. Its outcome may help shape future approaches to cultural stewardship and repatriation.
