In Egypt, farmers are turning to a fresh approach that blends clean energy with agriculture: agrivoltaics. By placing solar panels above crops, they are creating shaded growing spaces that can help reduce evaporation, ease heat stress, and produce electricity at the same time.

The idea is being explored through two pilot projects in the country, with partners testing how the model performs in both small farming communities and larger agricultural settings. The goal is not a one-size-fits-all formula, but a flexible system that can be adapted to local needs and crop types.

Researchers have found that some plants benefit from partial shade rather than full sun. In Egypt, farmers are experimenting with panel layouts that allow enough light to reach the fields while still lowering soil moisture loss. That balance can be especially valuable in hot, dry regions where water efficiency matters as much as yield.

Early signs are encouraging. On a regenerative farm in South Sinai, watermelon appears to be responding well under the panels installed in May. The electricity generated is already helping power irrigation equipment, and future uses could include supporting water treatment systems for brackish water.

Beyond the farm, the project is also gathering data on crop performance and energy output to guide future expansion. If the model proves effective, it could help communities produce food and power from the same land, making agriculture more adaptable in a warming climate. The future of farming may increasingly be shaped by systems that grow both harvests and resilience.
