Mogul Secures $5M Funding, Tracks $1.5B in Music Royalties

Understanding music rights and royalties can be a daunting task for artists, as they must ensure their data is consistently updated across various platforms to maximize earnings. Mogul, a pioneering platform founded by industry veterans Jeff Ponchick and Joey Mason, aims to simplify this process. Since its inception last year, Mogul has successfully assisted artists in tracking an impressive $1.5 billion in unclaimed royalties.

The startup recently announced it has raised $5 million in a new funding round, led by the Yamaha Music Innovations Fund, along with contributions from the Urban Innovation Fund, Mindset Ventures, and Fairway Capital Partners. This funding brings Mogul's total to over $6.3 million, enabling the company to expand its team from its current six employees.

Andrew Kahn, managing partner at Yamaha Music Innovations Fund, expressed confidence in Mogul's founding team, emphasizing their capability to develop tools that enhance artists' career management. He highlighted Mogul's unique advantage in its data layer, stating, "Mogul has built the most comprehensive, first-party data pipeline for residual income earners." This positions Mogul as a reliable source for accurate and timely royalty tracking.

Since launching, Mogul has evolved its offerings. Initially, the platform provided artists with a basic list of recommendations for catalog management. Now, it delivers actionable insights, including improved list formats and cross-platform corrections for catalog data, ensuring artists are well-informed about their potential earnings.

Ponchick elaborated on the platform's capabilities, explaining how it integrates with services like Sound Exchange to ensure artists receive their due royalties. If discrepancies arise, Mogul prompts users to provide missing information, streamlining the registration process. Users have reported an average increase of 20% in royalty revenues since utilizing Mogul's services.

Additionally, Mogul has introduced a catalog valuation tool that estimates the worth of an artist's catalog, breaking down values by individual tracks and revenue sources such as Spotify and Apple Music. The core mission remains to empower artists to manage and monetize their work more effectively.

While Mogul previously offered a free tier, Ponchick noted that it was not sustainable for the startup to provide automation tools at that level. The decision to eliminate the free tier allows Mogul to focus on delivering enhanced value to artists.

The platform is also exploring the complexities of tracking royalties for AI-generated music. Ponchick acknowledged the challenges posed by the evolving landscape, including issues of ownership and attribution. Kahn pointed out that the existing infrastructure was designed for human creators, making it difficult to navigate the nuances of AI contributions.

As Mogul continues to monitor regulatory developments, Ponchick believes the company is well-prepared to adapt to any changes in the industry. Competing against platforms like Notes.fm and Claimity, Mogul is poised to remain at the forefront of royalty tracking innovations.
