MatX Secures $500 Million in Series B Funding to Challenge Nvidia's AI Chips

MatX, an innovative chip startup established by two former Google hardware engineers, has successfully raised $500 million in a Series B funding round. This investment was spearheaded by Jane Street and Situational Awareness, a fund created by ex-OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner.

The ambitious aim of MatX is to enhance its processors to be ten times more efficient in training large language models (LLMs) compared to Nvidia's GPUs. This significant leap in technology could redefine the landscape of AI processing.

In addition to Jane Street and Situational Awareness, other notable investors in this round include Marvell Technology, NFDG, Spark Capital, and the co-founders of Stripe, Patrick and John Collison. Reiner Pope, the startup's founder and CEO, shared the news via a LinkedIn post.

While MatX did not disclose its current valuation, it is noteworthy that its closest competitor, Etched, recently raised $500 million at a valuation of $5 billion. This competitive landscape highlights the growing interest and investment in AI chip technology.

This latest funding round comes over a year after MatX secured approximately $100 million in Series A funding, also led by Spark Capital, which valued the startup at over $300 million at that time.

Before launching MatX in 2023, Reiner Pope was instrumental in developing AI software for Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), while his co-founder, Mike Gunter, played a key role in designing the TPU hardware. Their combined expertise positions MatX to make significant strides in the AI chip market.

The fresh capital will enable MatX to commence chip production in collaboration with TSMC, with plans to begin shipping these advanced processors by 2027.
