Mastodon, the decentralized social networking platform, reported a significant DDoS attack on its flagship server, mastodon.social, on Monday. This cyber incident disrupted access to the site, causing users to encounter error messages and outage warnings intermittently.
In a status update issued around 7 a.m. ET, the Mastodon team announced they were actively investigating the attack. By approximately 9:05 a.m. ET, they implemented a countermeasure, restoring access to the site. However, the company cautioned that users might still experience some instability as the attack was ongoing.
This incident follows a recent DDoS attack on another decentralized network, Bluesky, which had also faced service interruptions. Bluesky reported that while the attack was persistent, their service stabilized following a successful mitigation.
Mastodon representatives have not provided detailed insights into the attack's origin when approached for comments. DDoS attacks, which flood a server with excessive traffic to incapacitate it, have become increasingly powerful, with the largest recorded attack reaching a staggering 29.7 terabits per second, according to network security firm Cloudflare.
While such attacks can cause significant disruptions, they do not typically involve data theft. In the case of decentralized networks like Mastodon, users who have migrated their accounts to other providers remain unaffected. Currently, the DDoS attack appears to be focused solely on the larger mastodon.social server, leaving many smaller instances operational.
This resilience highlights the potential for decentralized networks to maintain functionality amidst cyber threats, paving the way for more robust online communities in the future.
