Introducing Vurt: The Mobile-First Streaming Platform for Indie Filmmakers Embracing Vertical Video

Short video platforms like TikTok have revolutionized the streaming industry, prompting established services such as Disney+, Peacock, and Netflix to explore short-form video options. This evolution raises an important question: how can independent filmmakers leverage the growing trend of vertical video?

Meet Vurt, a mobile-first streaming platform tailored specifically for indie filmmakers to share their micro-series and feature films in a vertical format. Officially launched on Tuesday, Vurt boasts over 100 original episodes, films, and TV shows across various genres, including works featuring stars like Kevin Hart and Vivica A. Fox. The platform promises new original content each week.

As audiences increasingly prefer content designed for mobile viewing, adapting traditional storytelling to vertical formats is a natural evolution. Vurt positions itself as a solution that aligns with this emerging trend.

The rise of "micro-drama" platforms, such as ReelShort and DramaBox, has highlighted a significant demand for engaging, bite-sized content. This segment has transitioned from a niche market to a multi-billion-dollar industry, with projections indicating ReelShort could reach approximately $1.2 billion in consumer spending by 2025, while DramaBox generated $276 million last year.

Vurt distinguishes itself with a unique approach to content distribution. Unlike conventional streaming platforms that often involve lengthy distribution processes, Vurt allows creators to submit their content directly. Once approved, filmmakers can upload their projects, making them accessible to audiences within just 48 to 72 hours.

For those looking to monetize their creations, Vurt operates on an AVOD (advertising-based video on demand) model, enabling revenue generation through ad placements. The platform also offers a non-exclusive licensing agreement with a 50/50 revenue split, ensuring filmmakers have a fair opportunity to profit from their work.

Founded by Ted Lucas, known for his success with Slip-N-Slide Records, the idea for Vurt emerged from his experiences while distributing his documentary "Miami Kingpins." Lucas recognized the distribution challenges faced by many filmmakers and sought to create a solution.

"Not every content creator and filmmaker has the resources to overcome these hurdles. I realized that it's a problem I could help solve," Lucas shared.

The founding team includes industry veterans such as Eric Tomosunas of Swirl Films, director Mark A. Samuels, and angel investor Hilmon Sorey, with Tarik Brooks, a former executive at BET and REVOLT, serving as an advisor.

As younger audiences increasingly consume content on mobile devices, it will be fascinating to see how the vertical format resonates with both independent creators and major streaming platforms. Could full-length vertical shows on Netflix or original films on TikTok become a reality? While the future remains uncertain, the shift toward vertical storytelling is clear.

"The way people consume content has already changed, and we're building something that fits that future," Lucas stated.

Vurt is currently available for free on the App Store and Google Play, along with a web version dedicated exclusively to vertical content.
