A new kind of dining experience in the West Village
Restaurateurs Giovanni Cervantes and Tania Apolinar have opened El Camarón Peludo, a small, walk-in-only seafood and wine bar in New York City's West Village. After years of serving fast-paced meals at Taqueria Ramírez and Carnitas Ramírez, the pair are taking a slower approach, inviting guests to linger over food, wine and a personal style of service.
The menu brings together Mexican seafood traditions and Spanish influences, with freshness at its center. Dishes range from simply prepared grilled prawns and carpaccio to Mexican favorites such as tuna tostadas and aguachile. The restaurant also offers wines from around the world in a cozy setting designed for a relaxed meal.
Chef Carlos Barrera joined the project after first connecting with Cervantes and Apolinar as a customer at Taqueria Ramírez. Their Instagram exchanges and a later pop-up collaboration helped build the partnership. Born in Mexico City, Barrera has worked at Michelin-starred restaurants in Spain and hosted pop-ups across New York.
The owners say the restaurant's concept took shape through conversations about Mexican seafood, European tapas bars and the flavors they missed from home. Its intimate format also marks a change from their other businesses, where speed and high-volume service are central.
El Camarón Peludo reflects how personal connections and cross-cultural inspiration can shape a neighborhood restaurant; concepts like this may continue to broaden New York's dining scene.
